December 6 – 7, 2023. Water is the source of life on earth and an indispensable resource for our activities. Without thoughtful use and management of water resources, human activities can potentially disturb the delicate balance between water resources and environmental sustainability.
Inland waters, in particular, are important components of the biosphere that sustain life and ecosystem services. Even though they contribute inconsiderable portion out of the total water globally, it is irrefutable that this ecosystem caters extensive ranges of goods and services. They are home to rich aquatic biodiversity that interacts with both abiotic and biotic components, making them important players in ecological processes and functions. Moreover, they provide huge cultural value to humanity. On the other hand, the explosion of human population and rapid economic growth, which drive the indispensable utilization of inland water resources, have resulted in the degradation of inland water ecosystems. These have adversely affected water quality, productivity, biodiversity, and the hydrologic cycle, which could severely impact their ability to support life and other functions. The urgent need to revive damaged ecosystems prompted the United Nations to declare the years 2021 to 2030 as the Decade for Ecosystem Restoration to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. These measures can help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent a mass extinction. The key message is: The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet – and its people. The success lies on everyone’s participation.
This joint International Conference is one of the international forums that aims to bridge multi-sectoral parties and communities from different backgrounds to share knowledge and experience and in support of sustainable water resources management. Additionally, the potential benefit from tropical inland waters has not yet been fully explored and used in a sustainable manner. Therefore, a particular forum for promoting tropical limnology is necessary to obtain more global recognition. Thus, this event is organized by the Indonesian Society of Limnology (MLI) – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), the Southeast Asian Limnological Network (SEALNet), the National University of Laos (NUoL), and the Research Centre for Limnology and Water Resources – National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (RCLWR-BRIN), in collaboration with the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the International Lake Environment Committee Foundation (ILEC) and the International Society of Limnology (SIL) – Asian Tropical Inland Waters Working Group. The joint committees are the reflection of our collaborative efforts to contribute to the sustainable management of tropical inland waters and their related systems.
